The Show da Criança (Childrens Show) takes place on Sunday afternoons on the Brasilian TV channel 'Rede Band'. The program is hosted by Raul Gil (raulgil.com.br) and has one of the highest audiences of viewers. There is currently a competition called Jovens Talentos (previously called 'Festival Infanto-Juvenil') which takes place during this program. Contestants that fail to get two votes from the panel of judges are thrown out. However, they can be voted back in via the internet. A further twist to this competition is that the contestants are offered money to voluntarily withdraw; the longer they are in the competition the more money they are offered. Some of the contestants come from poor families and the offer of up to $40,000 must be tempting for them, but normally they continue.

 - The program was recently raided by the 'Juiz de Menores' (a sort of head social worker) who claimed the children were badly treated. In particular some children were spending a long time traveling to and from the studios by coach. As a result Raul now pays for them to travel by plane and the junior competition for under 11s has now been cancelled. The competition is now called 'Jovens Talentos'

Here you will find details of the most popular performers and their new CD and DVD. The Show originally was recorded and aired on Rede Record but has now moved to 'Band' (channel 7) and is shown on Sunday evenings 4-9pm.

I may post the odd video here from time to time but due to copyright restrictions the majority of videos will be available at password protected storage sites such as our yahoo group.

The Jovens Talentos have released a CD commemorating 40 years of the 'Jovem Guarda'  A DVD which features a live concert held in October 2005 will also be available soon. The 'Jovem Guarda' were artists from the sixties who appeared on a television program hosted by Roberto Carlos. They sung a mixture of original songs and  arrangements of western songs such as those sung by the Beatles sung in Portuguese. See below for more details

Update -  The success of the CD and DVD Jovens Talentos has led to the search for more talented youngsters who will appear on the second CD and DVD. Two new competent boy singers have already been spotted - 11 year old Vitor Oliveira and 13 year old Felipe Pereira. Established Jovens Talentos are currently involved in a new feature of the show 'Tribute to the composer'. Every week they sing the best songs of well known Brasilian composers. Tributes have been given to the composers Renato Teixeira, Belchior. Michael Sullivan and Peninha.

Update -   Three of the older boys who featured on the first DVD have been vey sucessful and have recorded CDs and DVDs which have sold well. These boys are Caio Mesquita (an instumentalist - saxophone/flute) and Mayck e Lyan. Consequently all the yonger members of the Jovens Talentos have been got rid of. A new CD and DVD will be recorded soon.

Ramon - Ramon comes from Santa Caterina in the south of Brasil and is 13 years old.. .His first performance was 'Mia Gioconda' and Raul Gil described him as having a 'Peito do Galo' (chest of a cockerel).. . Ramon is a contestant in the competition. He has been thrown out once but was voted back via the internet and has returned singing a very 'tenor' repertoire of songs such as 'Granada' and 'O Sole Mio', Caruso etc. His singing has become very much like Alex Prior although his voice is more powerful. more info

Fabinho - Fabinho (shown above) was the most popular boy singer on Show  Criança a few months ago, despite the fact he cannot sing well. He plays his ten stringed guitar slightly better. The main reason for his popularity is his personality and his jokes.

Adair Cardoso - Adair has established himself as a competent singer. He is currently the best and most popular singer on the program and the music he sings is very commercial. Adair comes from Tangará de Serra, Mato Grosso and is 12 years old. He has appeared more than a dozen times on the program, most recently playing the guitar as well as singing. His nickname is 'passarinho' (little bird) A short documentary about Adair was made and shown on the Raul Gil program recently. more

Geisilaine - Geisilaine (10 years old) is the most successful girl singer currently on the program and has recorded a Karaoke video and CD. She also features on the Jovens Talentos CD and DVD

Alex Jr - Alex Junior (shown above) was a competitor in the younger age band of the competition (up to 10 years old). As the competition has been cancelled he now will appear as a paid performer ie contracted to the show. He shows exceptional talent for one so young although it would be nice to see him singing in a higher range. A video of him singing 'Anjo' is available (click here for video clip)more info

Cristian Fernandes - Cristian Fernandes was a popular boy singer on the program a couple of years back. Cristian won a previous competition which was run during the program. He went on to record a CD more info

Os Borrachinas - The identical twins come from Paraquay and their father is a 'Borracheiro' (person who mends tyres). There have been several sets of identical twins that have become successful in Brazil , see Kleber e Kelvin and Os Gemeos. These boys are currently singing in unison, when they become older and start to harmonize I think they will sound a lot better. Their most popular song was 'Mulher Chorona' more info.

Mateus Brunette - Mateus Brunette is 14 years old and is one of the more recent discoveries on the 'Jovens Talentos' He sings well in English. more

Max Petronio

Yago and Sayuri - Yago and Sayuri were members of the band (New) Trem da Alegria which in contrast to the original group was unsuccessful. They have appeared a few times recently singing a song especially written for them 'Vivo por Ela' and with which they won a competition in Spain. There have been several videos available of them singing as part of Trem da Alegria'. Yago now sings a sort of imitation tenor. During one TV appearance Yago sung an impromptu duet with Raul Gil of the very nice bolero La Barca. Yago features on the DVD Jovens Talentos but not on the CD.

Nica - Nica sings evangelical songs, mostly those of Mara Maravilha

Vitor Borges meets his idol Leanardo

A Show of Tears and Emotion

Brazilian people being what they are, it's not often a week goes by without the shedding of tears. When the show is run as a competition, losing is too much for some of the children. In the case of Vitor the crying paid off, since despite losing several times he was allowed back on the program as people felt sorry for him. A more pleasant 'turning on the taps' has occurred when the child meets up with his idol (see above).

Other emotional moments from the show have been:

 (i)  when Cristian Fernandes met  with his idol Daniel and was told he had a recording contract.

(ii) 13 year old Anderson Gonçalves captured the spectators hearts while suffering from 'stage fright' on his first TV performance.

(iii) 11 year old Deivison and his younger brother who travelled for 6 months to appear on the show.

Vitor Borges - Vitor Borges became popular on the program in 2003 singing mostly romantic songs, many of them by Leonardo (see above). This year he was a contestant in the Brazilian part of the Codigo Fama competition. He is now 13 years old.

Girl Singers

Many of the girl singers are 15 years old and appear and sing like adults. By far the best is Hevelyn Costa a 15 year old girl from Rio Grande do Sul. Click on their names for more info and a picture.
